Hooked on Walking Holidays has developed a wonderful walking holiday in France. France has a varied landscape allowing different types of walking and hiking holidays. Our French walking holiday is in the LOT region of south west France. Three famous rivers cross this region the Dordogne , Lot and Tarn rivers. Our walking holiday follows the River Lot through the limestone hills. Our walking holiday in the Lot valley is only available as a self led walking holiday.

The Lot valley is less explored than its famous neFrench Mapighbour the Dordogne Valley but it is just as beautiful and spectacular and less crowded. For sure you will see great scenery . lovely and varied footpaths and trails and you will come across many remote treasures. The regions is steep in history in not only its buildings but also in its human habitation with caves dating back to prehistoric times. You will walk and come across many medieval villages along the way. The Lot and Cele valleys around this region are built around a limestone plateau cut by deep valleys and covered with orchids and small white oaks.

Walking holiday in FranceDay 2 - 5

The route over these days takes you through the tracks and trails around the banks and hills of the Cele Valley which are surrounded by limestone cliffs. The paths are varied some being at river level ,giving you the chance to bathe, and some being on top of the gorge along the edge line. Sometimes the paths are close to cliff edges . Eventually you will reach a limestone plateau which you cross seeing ancient shepherd house dating back centuries. The plateau is very arid with wonderful flora along the way, especially orchids, in abundance. Here you will feel that time has forgotten this region, with ancient villages , caves and castles from the medieval times or cave paintings from prehistoric times. Many ancient houses can be seen clinging to cliff edges.
