Welcome to Hooked on Walking Holidays and our guided walking holiday in Portugal. This wonderful guided hiking vacation in Portugal is situated around 150 km from the west coast of Portugal. Not only will you explore the wonderful region on foot but you will be staying in high quality rural accommodation one of which has a swimming pool. Please see below for more details. For a holiday that combines coastal and countryside walks, an undiscovered region is waiting for you. Between Serpa and Mertola in southern Alentejo lies the National Park Vale do Guadiana. The park is particularly beautiful when carpeted in spring flowers. You will discover off the beaten track the beauty of unspoilt countryside and indulge in peaceful walks along the banks of the river Guadiana. You might even want to take a dip. Not forgetting one great advantage of walking in Portugal, because after all that walking you will have worked up an appetite, you will love the Alentejo’s traditional cooking. Just the thought of “porco preto” makes my mouth water.

Sunday:Mertola
As a starter we take a short drive to Mertola to discover its beauty and heritage. The guided tour gives us an insight into life during the Roman and Islamic periods. We then will have a picnic down at the banks of the river Guadiana. Strengthened for the afternoon we wander along the Guadiana to “Agua Alta” (3 ½ hours)

Monday:The old English railway
Today we will go back in time. During the last century the English mining company “Sabina” built, through extraordinary hardship, an incredibly picturesque railway track from “Mina Sao Domingos” to “Pomarao” to transport the sulphur they excavated. This extraordinary trail, spiced with a pinch of adventure leads us through picturesque typical Alentejo villages, along the old railway tracks, and through dark tunnels until we reach the last quay to England. (5 hours)

Tuesday: The Smugglers Route
This trek offers the chance to be among the first of a tiny handful of discoverers to explore this beautiful, remote, unspoilt, uninhabited wilderness, whilst treading Guideed Walking Holidayin the footsteps of history. Up against the border to Spain is a valley, in which the river Rio Chança runs, that was a traditional smugglers route for the inhabitants of the scatted villages along its banks. We begin our hike at the old village of Corte do Pinto. The trek twists and winds its way along the river banks until we reach Moinho dos Florista. With some luck, when passing through Monte da Eira Queimada we might spot some Deer and finish the trail at the mines of S. Domingo (4 ½ hours).

Wednesday: Along the river Guadiana
This outing will follow the southern banks of the river Guadiana and represent a classic hike through wonderful scenery. From the surrounding heights we enjoy great views over to Spain and over the rolling meadows of Alentejo. (5 ½ hours).

Thursday: Enchanted cliffs
We set out early in the morning for the enchanted cliffs in the southwest of Alentejo. Here we will follow the untamed coastline where we see little islands cast like pebbles in the sea, endless beaches and imposing cliffs lining the coast will grant us Hiking Vacaiton in Alentejoa completely unforgettable walk. (4 hours)

Friday: Relax day
Today we relax and absorb all our collected impressions, lounge and plan our next visit to Alentejo or next Hooked on Walking holiday.
